Do you know when to use PPE?

There are many jobs out there where danger lurks around every corner. It could be a place where heavy equipment is commonly used, or where the possibility of falling items can pose a risk to everyone who works there. These types of work environments are evaluated for risk factors, with the appropriate safety gear and training provided to the workforce. There are even some companies who will hire a trainer to come in and teach people how to create a safe work environment. That all happens in a perfect world, and there are some situations where employees are essentially forced to provide their own personal protection equipment (PPE).

There are also situations where there is some grey area, which usually occurs when a company has taken all the right precautions and deems their work space to be safe. They may not require that their employees wear protection, but may leave it up to each who works there. It is worth noting that there are specific safety regulations that have to be adhered to by each and every company, and as long as they follow those, they are mostly absolved of any wrongdoing if someone is injured on the job. Even if the place you work at has an exemplary safety record, there is still a chance that a freak incident could cause injury.

Wearing PPE in a work environment that has the potential for such incidents is always a good idea, but it does come with a bit of a warning. There are some people who feel they become invincible the moment they put on a hard hat or steel-toed boots, and that can cause them to become a little careless on the job. If you do choose to use this type of safety equipment, it’s imperative that you know what the limitations of each piece are. They will help in the event of an incident, but you still need to be aware of your surroundings at all times.

Once you have decided that PPE should be part of your work attire, you need to make sure that what you purchase is actually what you need. It’s not just about choosing the right equipment, but also making sure that it fits so that it will deliver the highest level of protection possible. When picking products, look for those marked “CE” as this will let you know that they adhere to the Personal Protective Equipment Regulations 2002. This is crucial, as you will just not be adequately protected without the right gear, no matter how safe you feel.

The company that you work for should be doing all that they can to ensure the safety of the group as a whole, but it’s up to you to add that extra layer of protection if you still do not feel entirely safe on the job. Choose the proper PPE and you could put yourself in an excellent position, but get it wrong and you may well be safer without it.
