NPORS Crane / Lift Supervisor Course N405

Overview

Using a mixture of classroom learning and hands on practical training, this NPORS Crane/Lift Supervisor course will teach you how to supervise lifting operations, while adhering to relevant legislation and health and safety guidelines.

If you already have basic knowledge of the construction industry, plus relevant site experience including slinging and lifting operations, this course will enable you to take the next step in becoming a recognised Crane/Lift Supervisor.

At the end of this course, delegates who successfully pass the training will receive an NPORS Operator Card, which is valid for three years.  Should you require the NPORS/CSCS Card (NPORS Red Trained Operators Card), you must confirm at the time of booking and provide evidence that the CSCS HSE Operatives touch screen test has been completed within the last two years.

Objectives

This NPORS course will give you a thorough understanding of the role of a Crane Supervisor. You’ll be able to carry out your work in accordance with legislation, regulations, codes of practice and industrial requirements. You’ll also:

  • Explain your responsibilities as a Crane Supervisor
  • Recognise worksite hazards and specific dangers associated with the construction industry
  • Understand and comply with relevant health and safety legislation
  • Identify different types of cranes and accessories
  • Explain the construction, uses, applications and functions of lifting equipment
  • Recognise the various set up, erecting, levelling and dismantling requirements for different types of lifting equipment
  • Documentation – find relevant information and interpret it accurately
  • Understand different methods of communication for lifting teams
  • Be able to place non-serviceable items out-of-service
  • Carry out ‘out-of-service’ security procedures
  • Identify overhead hazards, set up exclusion zones and take appropriate action in an emergency
  • Recognise unsafe lifting practices
  • Check load types, balance and integrity
  • Follow environmental guidelines and understand industry impact
  • Explain RCIs and anti-collision systems
  • Confidently supervise the movement of loads to various locations

  • British Standard 1721
  • The role of a crane supervisor
  • The role of an appointed person
  • Preparing a work area

Assessment

At the end of the course, delegates are required to take an assessment paper and practical test. If successful, you’ll be awarded the traditional NPORS Operator Card, which is valid for three years. 

Should you require the NPORS/CSCS Card (NPORS Red Trained Operators Card), you must confirm at the time of booking and provide evidence that you’ve completed the CSCS HSE Operatives touch screen test within the last two years. 

The NPORS Red card will be valid for two years and prior to the card expiry you'll need to register for a relevant plant NVQ. After successfully completing your NVQ, you’ll be issued with a blue Competent Operators Card, which is valid for five years.

The NPORS N405 Crane/Lift Supervisor course is suitable novice delegates who have basic knowledge of the construction industry and relevant site experience including slinging and lifting operations.

Prerequisites

A good understanding of spoken and written English will be necessary in order to attend and complete the course successfully.

Anyone wishing to apply for the NPORS/CSCS Card (NPORS Red Trained Operators Card), must confirm at the time of booking and provide evidence that the CSCS HSE Operatives touch screen test has been completed within the last two years.
