Make it a regular occurrence for everyone in the office to have a quick tidying session. If you can, pop it in everyone's diaries so they don't forget! Here comes the e-invite for... #ThrowItOutThursday!
Ensure each team is responsible and accountable for their own office areas. The tidy and organised HR team should not have to be accountable for the mess that the Marketing Team leaves behind each day.
Offer staff incentives for the cleanest and tidiest areas of the office. You could have an annual award for the best kept office space to motivate staff to keep an organised area at all times
Encourage staff to call-out any hazards they see, even if they are not in their department areas. It takes the whole office to keep everyone safe.
Advise staff to prepare space for future deliveries. If a team is aware they have a large delivery of stock, promotional items or stationery coming in, then make sure they have space for it when it comes in so it doesn't block exit routes once it arrives.
Get organised! An organised office is a clutter-free office and a clutter-free office has far less tripping hazards. Trip to IKEA here we come!
With so many desks, computers, printers and phones in an office, it's easy for wires to get tangled up or lay somewhere as a tripping hazard, so make sure your staff are conscious of where their wires are and use cable tubes when you can to keep them out of the way and prevent them from tangling.
Talk to employees about there Health & Safety concerns. It may not be that your employees are so concerned with the wires and the clutter, it may be that they are concerned with the neck strain they are getting from the glare on their screens or the back ache they have from the office chairs. Until you ask your employees how they are feeling, then you don't know exactly what is disrupting their health.
Make employees aware of how they can go about reporting safety hazards and health concerns. If it is simple and easy to report concerns then employees are going to be more likely to participate.
Have your Health & Safety officer make regular walk-throughs of the office taking note of any hazards and having the appropriate person dealing with them. Always give staff a deadline as to when a hazard must be rectified for.
