What is City & Guilds?
Founded in 1878, and currently presided by HRH The Princess Royal, City & Guilds are a leading, global awarding body in Skills, Development & Apprenticeships. Their mission as an organisation is to assist individuals, businesses and economies in developing skills for success.
With work relevant qualifications, apprenticeships, accreditation and assessments, they have been able to construct their services to recognise important work place skills.
With the constant advancements of workplaces, technology and the way people work, City & Guilds simultaneously foresee the ever changing needs and requirements of people and their industries by adapting to factors such as technological advancements and ways people learn in the modern age around the globe.
Their primary goal is to ensure that everyone has the relevant skills and qualities to achieve success both short and long term.
Confined Space Training
Any enclosed location where there is a risk of death or serious injury from hazardous substances or dangerous situations can be considered a confined space. Contrary to popular belief, these spaces are not always small, but must be enclosed in some respect.
Certain jobs require employees to take on and perform difficult tasks that most occupations wouldn’t. For those who work jobs involving places such as sewage, vessels, tanks, chambers and more, will be familiar with difficult requirements, especially when needed to work within confined spaces. Working in a confined space is no easy feat, and can be extremely difficult and fearsome for many, however with the correct training and experience, these jobs can be performed safely and professionally.
City & Guilds provide specialised, accredited Confined Space training courses which are broken down into 3 risk levels, Low-Risk, Medium-Risk & High-Risk which provide delegates with the knowledge and practical skills to carry out work safely within confined space environments.
City & Guilds: Confined Space (Low-Risk)
The City & Guilds Confined Space (Low-Risk) course is designed to educate those working in in low risk confined space environments. Low-risk confined spaces have shallow entrance points, easily accessible with no obstructions, natural or artificial ventilation, and no likely danger of flooding. Despite being low-risk, entry into these areas still requires correct training and safety requirements such as protective clothing (i.e. Hats, Waterproofs, Gloves, Overalls etc.), mechanical ventilation, portable gas monitors and more.
Throughout the low-risk confined space training course, delegates will be trained on how to assess the risk of confined space hazards. This will include the use of harness tripod, man-riding winch/fall arrest and safety lines, types of gaseous atmospheres, portable gas monitoring equipment and their use, plus emergency preparedness and procedures. The duration of the course will be 1 day and will cover:
In order to register, delegates must be at least 18 years old, physically fit and in good health due to the strenuous and demanding nature of working within a confined space. Those taking part in the training course should also not have problems with eyesight, hearing, heart disease, high blood pressure, asthma, epilepsy, fear of heights/confined spaces, vertigo, difficult with balance, impaired limb function, alcohol or drug dependence or psychiatric illness.
The course assessment will include delegates taking part in practical exercises with relevant equipment, planning confined space entry and a written examination, all of which will be observed. Anyone who works in low-risk confined spaces, such as those where access is straightforward, unimpeded and flooding is unlikely, for example meter pits, valve chambers, booster pumping stations and PRV chambers. Upon successful completion, students will be awarded with a City & Guilds Level 2 Qualification.
City & Guilds: Confined Space (Medium-Risk)
The City & Guilds accredited Confined Space Medium-Risk course is essential for anyone working within confined spaces such as, sewers, tanks, chambers, vessels etc. that involve access risks and the requirement of escape breathing apparatus. Medium-risk confined spaces should be adequately supervised due to the visibly larger hazards compared with those you would find within a low-risk confined space such as restricted entry points and exits, oxygen deprivation, the potential introduction of toxic fumes and more, therefore managers and supervisors of operatives should also complete this course in order for work to be carried out correctly and safely.
Throughout the medium-risk confined space training course, students will demonstrate a solid awareness of safe working practises and emergency procedures, as well as the operation of a variety of equipment. Those partaking will be taught how to choose, utilise, examine, and maintain confined space apparatus. This will address emergency breathing equipment as well as how to safely enter and work within medium-risk confined spaces. The training course will span across 2 days and will cover:
Delegates taking part in this training will need to be 18 and over, physically fit and in good health. Due to the confined space environment being both demanding and strenuous, delegates should not have problems with eyesight, hearing, heart disease, high blood pressure, asthma, epilepsy, fear or heights/confined spaces, vertigo, difficult with balance, impaired limb function, alcohol or drug dependence or psychiatric illness.
Delegates will complete practical assessments and a final written examination. Should students successfully complete the course, a City & Guilds certificate will be awarded which will be valid for 3 years.
City & Guilds: Confined Space (High-Risk)
The City & Guilds-accredited High-Risk Confined Space training course is designed for anyone working in high risk confined space environments that require full respiratory protection, such as sewers, vessels, tanks, and chambers where complex operations take place. High-risk confined spaces present likely danger to workers and the hazards within cannot be controlled or removed. It is imperative for those working within high-risk confined spaces to be correctly trained in tackling hazards with the usage of protective equipment and apparatus.
Those taking part in the high risk confined space training course, will have to demonstrate a thorough awareness of safe working practices and emergency procedures, including the usage of entrance and safety equipment, as well as respiratory protection. Students will be taught how to safely access, work in, and exit high-risk confined spaces, including how to utilise full breathing apparatus and equipment, follow procedures, handle emergencies, and apply appropriate behaviour, as well as industry understanding and requirements for safe working in high-risk confined spaces.
The City & Guilds High-Risk Confined Space course will stretch over the course of 3 days, in which time students will cover:
Throughout the training course, students will complete practical assessments and a final written assessment, After successful course completion, delegates will receive the relevant City & Guilds certificate which will be valid for 3 years.
