Improving the Environment one step at a time

Over the past couple of years, the Government has been working hard to improve the environment,  with several pledges in place.  However, they cannot improve the environment on their own and require the assistance of the UK population.  If this is something you want to assist with, you could follow the Government's guidelines or even take an Environmental course to assist with your every day duties.

The Government made a number of pledges designed to protect the environment by reducing pollution, the amount of waste as well as protecting areas of parkland and nature reserves. Being environmentally friendly actually works out better in the long run for the Government, as it protects the future generations.  However, in order for the pledges to work, the country needs to work together.

Let's look in more detail at some of the Government's pledges and aims over the next forty years.  The first pledge is to reduce the UK's greenhouse gas emissions by 80% by 2050.  This objective was set in accordance with the 2008 Climate Change Act – the worlds first legally binding climate change target.  By making the country more energy efficient, it is believed that we will be less exposed to high energy prices in the future.

The second pledge from the Government is to sustain and enhance trees, woodland and forests.  We all know the importance of trees to our every day living; whether it be a single tree in a park or an entire forest, trees are important.  Climate change and the increased need for housing can affect the amount of trees we have in Britain, putting forests at risk and affecting the environment negatively.  With this in mind, we need to ensure that trees and woodland are protected from building and climate change.

Perhaps one of the most interesting aims of the Government is to encourage businesses to manage their impact on the environment.  This is interesting as it is up to every individual who owns or works for a business to play their part.  Research show that by using resources more effectively, businesses can save around £23 billion every year as well as reduce carbon emissions.

Every business needs to consider their impact on the environment through operating.  Larger businesses in particular, may even have an 'environmental officer'.  By undertaking the NEBOSH Environmental Certificate you can better understand businesses requirements in terms of the environment.
