The Health and Safety Executive have this week launched a consultation on the revised 'Approved Code of Practice' (ACOP) which could affect a wide range of people. Changes in legislation can be kept up with by undertaking the
IOSH Managing Safely course.
The proposed changes could affect employers, building owners, managers and worker representatives such as unions, all of whom have been invited to give their views. The ACOP has been revised in response to an independent review of the health and safety legislation. The review stated that legislation needs to be changed to make it easier for employers to understand and meet legal obligations.
The current ACOP is believed to be outdated, as new regulations have been included. For this reason, it has been suggested that out-of-date duties and requirements are removed from the ACOP to make legislation clearer for employers. The ACOP is also likely to be simplified to clarify what employers have to do to comply with the Workplace Regulations. It is understood that language is currently outdated meaning that employers struggle to understand their responsibilities. The consultation will be ending on the 30th July 2013 when a decision should be reached.
Health and safety legislation is often changing, so how can you keep up to date with current legislation? The Institute of Occupational Safety and Health have developed a series of IOSH Safety courses for employees, Managers, Senior Executives and Directors to undertake. Each course is slightly different, adapted to the different responsibilities for each level.
The IOSH Managing Safely course is one of our most popular, designed for managers and supervisors in any business sector and any size organisation. The course has been designed to enable managers to introduce new controls as well as implement changes within their department. The aim of the IOSH Managing Safely course is to promote a safer workplace in line with companies organisational policies and health and safety compliance.
The qualification covers a range of topics including risk assessment, identifying hazards, investigating accidents and protecting the environment. It also looks at current legislations and new laws which may come in within the near future. The course enables delegates to fully understand their responsibilities when it comes to health and safety in the workplace.
