New Year, New Skills – Health and Safety Courses

According to a survey by a popular social networking site, more than 74% of us added a professional goal to our New Years resolutions for 2013.   This could be looking for a new job in order to further a career, or perhaps simply taking health and safety courses to improve your chances of promotion.

Since the recession started, people have been more reluctant to leave their jobs, or try to get a new job when they are unhappy.  However, with jobs slowly growing, people are starting to look at new professional goals.  It has been noted that, in the majority of cases, rather than a new job, most people stated they want to learn new skills to further their careers.

The general New Years Resolution tends to be 'lose weight', 'save money' or 'get fit', however it is often the case that these New Years Resolutions don't last any longer than January.  Even if you do manage to lose that bit of weight, it is often the case that it will go back on again!  However, when you acquire a new skill, you will often have that skill for life.  It is also likely to help you to progress your career in the future.

So, what kind of course should you take this year?  One sector which is forever growing is the health and safety sector.  Occupational health and safety is required whatever industry you work within.   Whether you are in construction, working in retail or even in an office, you need to be aware of health and safety regulations.

Last year alone, over one million people reported a health and safety incident, and twenty seven million working days were lost due to a health and safety accident at work.  Many of these accidents could have been prevented with effective health and safety training.  Whilst the majority of workplace accidents occur on a construction site, there are also many accidents which occur due to trips and falls.  This means that even if you work in an office, you are at risk.

Health and safety legislations change every year and it is the employers responsibility to ensure all workers are up-to-date with current legislations.  Anyone undertaking a health and safety training course can help to ensure their organisation is keeping to the latest health and safety rules.  This makes a health and safety training course very beneficial to any individual.
