The Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) is a global organisation based in the UK. It is dedicated to good health and safety practice in the workplace. With more than 50,000 members in more than 130 countries, IOSH is a prominent authority in occupational health and safety. And because of its global reach, membership and qualifications are recognised the world over.

The Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) works with the construction industry to encourage training and help develop a safe, professional and qualified workforce. One of the ways they do this is through the Site Manager Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS)  - a certification that construction employers and site managers must take every five years. 

NVQs (National Vocational Qualifications) are work-based qualifications designed to assess and certify your competence in a specific job role. Unlike traditional academic qualifications, NVQs focus on practical skills and knowledge rather than theory, and are achieved through a combination of workplace assessments and observations, exams and portfolio building. Not all NVQs include exams.

Soft skills training focuses on developing personal qualities that affect how we interact and navigate the workplace. You may also know them as people skills as they are behaviour-related and interpersonal skills. Hard skills, on the other hand, are measurable and learned through training and education, and are usually technical abilities specific to a job, such as operating machinery. Soft skills are transferable across different positions and industries.

NEBOSH courses will be a familiar sight to many. NEBOSH is a UK-based exam board known around the world for its quality and comprehensive training programmes and courses. The courses are suitable for all sectors and there are some specifically aimed at the construction industry, such as the NEBOSH Health and Safety Management for Construction Certificate, both in person and online, or the NEBOSH Certificate in Oil & Gas. But there are also several fire safety, environmental and general health and safety training courses available.
