A growing concern has been developing in the construction industry as experts suggest that there are a lack of appropriately skilled supervisors and site managers.
Through the recession over the previous years, the construction trade has suffered indefinitely, with people choosing stability with what they already own as opposed to buying new houses which was deemed to be a risk- reducing the appeal of an occupation in site management emphasised by the reports suggesting that 90% of employers looking to employ a manager had difficulty in doing so, however with the appeal now rising and the percentage decrease, SMSTS training courses are gaining popularity.
External help is required to fund courses such as the CITB SMSTS in order to allow delegates to have the befitting training of a managerial position. These courses are beneficial and able to make everyone happy and safe. Recent inspections deeming construction sites unsafe has exemplified the cries to increase site safety which in turn has lead to a result in which supervisors (SSSTS) and site managers (SMSTS) must have a specific set of skill training to take on such a large responsibility, as some are in charge of hundreds of workers enhancing the required understanding.
The Site Management Safety Training Scheme is the highest respected qualification by the Health and Safety Department and is offered to managers of varying fields to ensure the capability of safe construction covering all relevant legislation and other topics which can influence safety within the industry, in an attempt to reduce the 172 workers who died in the workplace between 2011/2012.
SMSTS training is a qualification which is to increase construction efficiency by reducing the 27 million working days lost in the same period (2011-2012) as candidates at the end of the course will be able to implement all health, safety, and welfare legislation in protection of the workers whilst understanding their personal duties and responsibilities in regard to employees safety, whilst the course itself will highlight the need for valid Risk Assessment in the workplace, in amongst the necessary control measures.
SMSTS certificates are valid for five years before candidates are required to attend a two day SMSTS Refresher course in order to maintain an up-to-date understanding of ever changing legislation.
The CITB SMSTS is an excellent manner in which to improve your management skills, assessed through an examination along with a presentation of a suitable health and safety solution, provided for workers all across the United Kingdom.
