CITB SMSTS Refresher 2 Day Course

Overview

The 2 day CITB SMSTS Refresher Training course is designed for candidates who have already passed the SMSTS or SMSTS Refresher Course. All SMSTS certificates are valid for 5 years from the date of issue. Candidates will be required to show their current in-date 5 day SMSTS or 2 day SMSTS Refresher certificate and if known provide details of where and when they took the course. Delegates MUST attend both days in order to obtain their certification.

By attending the SMSTS refresher course delegates will be updated on developments in construction legislation and use of appropriate best practice. This CITB course will also enhance existing managerial skills necessary to achieve compliance with any new legal duties and responsibilities placed on them and their workforce.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Any Delegate that does not attend prior to the end date of their SMSTS certificate will risk their right to attend a refresher course and will be required to attend the full course.

Objectives

At the end of the SMSTS Refresher course successful candidates will be able to: -

  • Manage health and safety on site in accordance with current legal provisions, and within the context of their management and supervisory role
  • Understand their legal, moral and social obligations to maintain a healthy and safe site, as well as consider the benefits and costs of implementation to their organisation
  • Identify and avoid potential hazards on site
  • Prepare method statements, risk assessments and other statutory requirements of the Health and Safety at Work Act

Agenda

The SMSTS Refresher course will cover the following topics: -

  • Legislation, ACOP updates with discussions on impact and practical aspects of compliance
  • Overview of proposed/impending legislation
  • RIDDOR - Accident statistics, costs, causes, management responsibilities/methods in prevention
  • HSE's current focus on construction activities
  • Safety management systems, policies, plans and performance measuring
  • Management of Contractors
  • Communication and consultation aspects, effective use of 'toolbox talks' and 'site inductions'
  • Behavioural Safety including awareness of human error, stress and prevention
  • Syndicate exercises

Assessment

At the end of the CITB SMSTS Refresher course delegates are required to sit an exam paper consisting of 25 questions.  There are 18 multiple choice questions (each worth one mark) and 7 questions in multi-response or short written answer format (each worth two marks). The SMSTS Refresher exam pass mark is 81% (26 out of 32).

Delegates must attend both of the days, in accordance with the course programme, to achieve the necessary learning objectives and qualify for re-certification.  Successful candidates will be issued with the CITB Site Management Safety Training Scheme Refresher (SMSTS Refresher) certificate which is valid for 5 years.

 

Who Should Attend?

Anyone who has attended the five day SMSTS or 2 day SMSTS Refresher Course, and whose certificate is due to expire.  Expiry of the certificate is 5 years. 

Suggested Progression

Delegates may wish to continue their professional development by completing the NVQ Level 6 in Construction Site Management or NVQ Level 6 in Construction Contracting Operations Management course.

CITB - Construction Industry Training Board (Site Safety Plus)

Prerequisites

Only those delegates who have passed the five day Site Manager Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS), or a previous SMSTS Refresher (2 Day) course in the last five years, and can provide evidence of this are eligible to attend the two-day SMSTS refresher course.

A good understanding of spoken and written English will be necessary in order to attend and complete the course successfully.

  • When will I receive my certificate?

    CITB certificates are issued electronically via email, and typically take around 2 weeks to be issued.  You can also view your results online via the CITB profile at www.citb.co.uk/cards-testing/online-card-checker

     

  • Will lunch be Included?

    The joining instructions will indicate if lunch is provided for the duration of your course.  Should you need to know prior to booking please contact one of our team who will be happy to advise.

  • When will I receive my Course Joining Instructions?

    Course joining instructions are sent 7 to 10 days prior to course commencement.  If you book within this time frame they are emailed within 24 hours of the booking being placed.

  • Do I have to attend all days/sessions?

    Full attendance on all days, at the required times stated on your course joining instructions, is compulsory to successfully complete the course.

  • What time does my course start?

    Start and finish times are confirmed on your joining instructions which are issued 7 to 10 days prior to course commencement.  Failure to arrive at the requested time may result in the delegate being turned away.

  • Can I complete a name change on my booking?

    Yes, a name change can be completed free of charge providing the delegate being substituted has the required pre-requisites. You can submit your request by emailing our customer service team at training@easybooktraining.co.uk or calling on 01892 543000.

  • Why do I need to provide a pre-requisite?

    Pre-requisites are requested when the awarding body requires proof of a previous in date qualification or experience, to ensure delegates are eligible to attend. These guidelines are set policies which we are not able to amend.  If you do have any queries or are unable to provide sufficient evidence please contact our customer service team at your earliest convenience on 01892 543000.

  • Will I receive a card with my certificate?

    CITB do not currently offer a card option in place of the e-cert.

  • What happens if I fail the course?

    If you should fail the course our customer service team will be in contact to discuss your options.  Our team will talk through the process to help you achieve the qualification required in the most effective way.
