EUSR stands for the Energy & Utility Skills Register, the online register of training and skills for the energy and utilities industries in the UK. It works with the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) to set industry training standards across power, gas, water, telecommunications and waste management.

A SHEA card relates to SHEA training, which stands for Safety, Health & Environmental Awareness. This training is compulsory for anyone requiring operational site access in the UK utilities sector, and successful candidates receive a SHEA card that acts as a passport to grant that access.

EUSR SHEA cards are usually valid for between three and five years, depending on the specific training scheme completed. Renewal typically involves a refresher course to keep the qualification current.

An EUSR card isn't quite the same as a CSCS card, though the two are closely linked. An EUSR card is the utilities industry's alternative to a CSCS card, and SHEA schemes carry CSCS Partner Card status, meaning the EUSR ID card displays the CSCS logo. This gives individuals access to CSCS-controlled operational sites for utilities work without needing to carry a separate card.

To get registered on the EUSR system, you need to complete an approved EUSR training course, such as SHEA Gas, SHEA Power, SHEA Water or a relevant excavation course, and pass the associated assessments. Once you pass, you're issued a unique EUSR ID number and a digital EUSR card, with a physical card available on request.
