Overview

This 1 day Adult Mental Health Course has been developed for anyone who wants to qualify as a Mental Health First Aid Responder, as well as those looking to develop their knowledge of mental health and wellbeing.

Learn to recognise the signs and symptoms of mental illness at work and help promote a supportive workplace culture. You’ll gain the confidence to offer appropriate, non-judgmental support to someone in need, as well as the skills to help those returning to work after mental illness.

Objectives

By the end of this one-day mental health course, you’ll:

  • Identify common warning signs of mental illness
  • Understand depression and how it can affect people in the workplace
  • Explain the impact that mental health issues and disorders can have
  • Be aware of the discrimination and stigma surrounding mental health
  • Understand the Mental Health First Aid action plan protocol (DR EFG)

This adult mental health course covers the following subject areas:

  • What is mental health and mental health first aid?
  • An introduction to stress and mental health in the workplace
  • The roles and responsibilities of a Mental Health First Aid Responder
  • The effect of alcohol and drug use on mental health
  • Understanding depression, anxiety, anxiety disorder and stress
  • Schizophrenia, Bipolar and psychosis
  • How to have a conversation around wellbeing
  • Learn how to listen and show empathy
  • Applying crisis first aid following a traumatic event
  • Self-harm – the signs, treatments and recovery
  • How to build a mentally healthy workplace
  • Suicide continuum, signs and symptoms
  • How to give appropriate mental health support to colleagues
  • Resources, first aid and treatment for depression
  • How to recognise eating disorders, substance abuse, self-harm, OCD and PTSD
  • Self-care, recovery and building resources

Assessment

To gain your Level 2 Award in Mental Health: Workplace Responder qualification, you’ll need to pass a multiple-choice question paper at the end of the course.

Who Should Attend?

This first aid training course is suitable for anyone with an interest in mental health, or those who would like to increase their awareness and understanding of various mental health issues.

If you would like to take on the role of Mental Health First Aid Responder in your workplace, you’ll find this training course an excellent resource.  It will enable you to develop essential listening skills to support colleagues and guide them towards getting the right help.

Please be aware that this course covers sensitive issues, such as suicide and self-harm. Therefore, we recommend that you don’t book on a colleague’s behalf without speaking to them first, as they may not be comfortable with some of the issues discussed.

Anyone who finds the course content upsetting is free to leave at any point.  No prerequisite knowledge is required to attend this course, but an interest in the subject matter would be useful.

All delegates must be over the age of 16 and have a basic (level 2) understanding of the English language.

Suggested Progression

After completing the Adult Mental Health First Aid 1-day course, many attendees go on to study the Adult Mental Health 2 Day Course

  • All delegates must be over the age of 16 and have a basic (level 2) understanding of the English language.
  • Pre-Course reading materials will be sent through once your booking is placed. Please read through before attending the course.
  • Delegates are required to bring relevant ID, as outlined in the pre-course reading material.

  • Will lunch be Included?

    The joining instructions will indicate if lunch is provided for the duration of your course.  Should you need to know prior to booking please contact one of our team who will be happy to advise.

  • When will I receive my Course Joining Instructions?

    Course joining instructions are sent 7 to 10 days prior to course commencement.  If you book within this time frame they are emailed within 24 hours of the booking being placed.

  • What time does my course start?

    Start and finish times are confirmed on your joining instructions which are issued 7 to 10 days prior to course commencement.  Failure to arrive at the requested time may result in the delegate being turned away.

  • Can I complete a name change on my booking?
