CITB ONLINE SMSTS Refresher Course (Remote Learning)

This two day virtual course is delivered remotely using instructor-led online learning, and the course content remains the same as classroom-based training, though delegates attend a scheduled, interactive class via Zoom video conferencing rather than in person.

Designed for candidates who have already passed the CITB SMSTS Course or a previous SMSTS Refresher Course, the CITB Online SMSTS Refresher Course (Remote Learning) updates delegates on developments in construction legislation and appropriate best practice, while enhancing existing managerial skills needed to achieve compliance with new legal duties and responsibilities. To take part, delegates need access to a laptop or desktop computer with a webcam, microphone and speaker; tablets aren't supported for this course. SMSTS certificates are valid for five years from the date of issue, and candidates must show their original five day certificate, along with details of where and when they took the course if known. Delegates must attend both days to obtain certification, and it takes approximately two to three weeks for the CITB to issue an E-Cert following successful completion.

Please note that any delegate who doesn't attend before their certificate's end date risks losing their right to attend a refresher course and will instead need to attend the full course again.

At the end of the CITB Online SMSTS Refresher Course (Remote Learning), successful candidates will be able to:

• Manage health and safety on site in accordance with current legal provisions, and within

  the context of their management and supervisory role

• Understand their legal, moral and social obligations to maintain a healthy and safe site, as well as consider the benefits and costs of implementation to their organisation
• Identify and avoid potential hazards on site
• Prepare method statements, risk assessments and other statutory requirements of the Health and Safety at Work Act

The CITB Online SMSTS Refresher Course (Remote Learning) will cover the following topics:

• Legislation, ACOP updates with discussions on impact and practical aspects of compliance
• Overview of proposed/impending legislation
• RIDDOR: accident statistics, costs, causes, management responsibilities/methods in prevention
• HSE's current focus on construction activities
• Safety management systems, policies, plans and performance measuring
• Management of Contractors
• Communication and consultation aspects, effective use of toolbox talks and site inductions
• Behavioural Safety including awareness of human error, stress and prevention
  Syndicate exercises

At the end of the CITB Online SMSTS Refresher Course (Remote Learning), delegates are required to sit an exam paper consisting of 25 questions, made up of 18 multiple-choice questions worth one mark each and seven multi-response or short written answer questions worth two marks each. The pass mark is 81% (26 out of 32). The exam takes place at the end of the course via a Zoom video call with your tutor, and no secondary devices, including mobile phones, are allowed during the exam. Delegates must attend both days, in accordance with the course programme, to achieve the necessary learning objectives and qualify for re-certification. Successful candidates are issued with the CITB Site Management Safety Training Scheme Refresher (SMSTS Refresher) certificate, valid for five years.

The CITB Online SMSTS Refresher Course (Remote Learning) is for anyone who has attended the five day SMSTS course or a two day SMSTS Refresher Course, and whose certificate is due to expire. Expiry of the certificate is five years from issue.

Only delegates who have passed the five day CITB SMSTS Course, or a previous SMSTS Refresher (2 Day) course in the last five years, and can provide evidence of this, are eligible to attend the CITB Online SMSTS Refresher Course (Remote Learning). A good understanding of spoken and written English is also necessary to attend and successfully complete the course. Students are required to complete their training on a laptop or desktop computer with a webcam, microphone and speaker; tablets are not supported.
