Emergency First Aid at Work Course

Emergency First Aid at Work Course

1 Day CourseClassroom

Not every workplace needs a fully qualified First Aider, but someone still needs to know what to do in those first critical minutes, and the Emergency First Aid at Work Course has been designed for exactly that person: anyone likely to take charge of first aid equipment during an emergency in the absence of a qualified First Aider. Delivered over one day, it's recommended as the minimum level of training for low-risk workplace environments and helps organisations meet their regulatory requirements where a risk assessment shows emergency protocols alone are sufficient.

Not sure whether you need this course or the full First Aid at Work Course? The Emergency First Aid at Work Course covers emergency protocols only, suited to lower-risk workplaces, while the full First Aid at Work qualification runs over three days and covers a much broader range of injuries and conditions for higher-risk environments. The aim here is to give participants enough knowledge and confidence to deal with an accident until a qualified first aider or the emergency services take over, covering everything from basic life support and AED use through to managing an unconscious casualty and treating burns, bleeding and shock.

Because the course is practical in nature, candidates should wear casual clothing, and female delegates are advised to wear trousers. It's also strongly recommended that all first aiders complete a half-day refresher course annually to keep their skills current, even though the certificate itself remains valid for three years.

Please note that a medical declaration applies: anyone currently suffering or with a history of back, neck, arm or knee problems, rupture or hernia, heart disease, high blood pressure, bronchitis, asthma or chest problems, blackouts, seizures or epilepsy, or anyone currently or recently pregnant, is advised to check with their GP before attending, and the training provider reserves the right to prevent a delegate from completing the course where safety could be put at risk.

On completion of the Emergency First Aid at Work Course candidates will understand:

  • Principles of first aid
  • The action to be taken in the event of an emergency
  • The correct method of basic life support
  • AED (use of an AED, chain of survival)

The Emergency First Aid at Work Course will include sessions on:

  • Aims and principles of first aid
  • What to do in an emergency
  • Management of the unconscious casualty
  • Assessment and treatment of a casualty who is wounded or bleeding
  • Assessment and treatment of burns and scalds
  • Dealing with seizures
  • Choking (Adult)
  • Resuscitation (Adult CPR)
  • Shock
  • Health & Safety (First Aid) Regulations

Certification of the Emergency First Aid at Work Course is dependent on successful continuous assessment of the student. Assessment is carried out through observation along with some written exercises. Whilst the written elements are straightforward, candidates require a basic command of English. Students who complete the course and are deemed to have reached the required standard are issued with a certificate which is valid for three years.

The Emergency First Aid at Work Course is for any member of an organisation who is likely to find themselves taking charge of first aid during a first aid emergency.

A medical declaration applies to the Emergency First Aid at Work Course. For the safety of yourself and others, it's recommended that anyone currently suffering, or who has ever suffered, from back, neck, arm or knee problems, rupture or hernia, heart disease, high blood pressure, bronchitis, asthma or chest problems, or blackouts, seizures or epilepsy, checks with their GP before attending the course. The same applies to anyone currently or recently pregnant. It's the employer's responsibility to choose a person who can physically fulfil the role of a first aider in the workplace, and the training provider reserves the right to prevent a delegate from completing the course if any of the above apply and the trainer feels the delegate could put themselves or others at risk.
