CITB ONLINE Tunnelling Safety Training (TSTS) Course (Remote)

The Online Tunnelling Safety Training Scheme (TSTS) (Remote Learning) is delivered remotely, using instructor-led online learning, giving anyone who works in the tunnel construction industry a thorough understanding of the working environment and any potential hazards they'll face on site, all without needing to travel to a training venue. You'll attend a scheduled, interactive class via online video conferencing, with the course content remaining the same as classroom-based training.

Developed in collaboration with the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB), the British Tunnelling Society (BTS) and TunnelSkills, you'll draw on the knowledge of a wide range of industry experts throughout the course, with input from contractors and clients bringing real-world challenges to life through practical learning. Since tunnel environments are, by their nature, confined spaces, anyone whose work also involves other confined space environments should look at the City & Guilds Confined Space Medium Risk (6160-09) Course or City & Guilds Confined Space High Risk (6160-03) Course alongside this course, depending on the complexity of the space involved.

At the end of the training, you'll feel confident in all health and safety aspects of tunnel construction. To take part, you'll need access to a laptop or desktop computer with a webcam, microphone and speaker. The exam takes place at the end of the course via an online video call with your tutor, and no secondary devices, including mobile phones, are allowed during the exam. Please note that it takes approximately two to three weeks for the CITB to issue an E-Cert following successful completion.

• Working in confined spaces
• Surface works
• Shafts
• Tunnel construction and operations
• Tunnelling plant and equipment
• Control of underground plant
• Emergency procedures and risk management
• Occupational health and first aid
• Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

This online course covers the following topics:

• Tunnelling legislation and standards
• The health, safety and occupational hazards of tunnelling
• Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required for the tunnelling environment
• The principles of risk assessment and management
• Identifying risks
• Communicating risks with fellow workers within the tunnelling environment
• Key operations within portals, shaft tops and pit bottoms
• Each operation's role in tunnelling activities
• The fundamentals of tunnel construction: methods and associated risks
• The importance of knowing which methods to use for each ground type
• Hazards and control measures related to plant, equipment and services
• Multiple-choice assessment

At the end of the Online Tunnelling Safety Training Scheme (TSTS) (Remote Learning), you'll take an exam consisting of:

• A multiple-choice test of 25 questions
• A pass mark of 72% or above

The exam takes place via an online video call with your tutor, and no secondary devices, including mobile phones, are allowed during the exam. On completion, you'll receive a Tunnelling Safety Training Scheme (TSTS) certificate, which is valid for three years.
