CITB SSSTS Refresher Course

CITB SSSTS Refresher Course

1 Day CourseClassroom

Keeping supervisory knowledge sharp matters as much as gaining it in the first place, and the CITB SSSTS Refresher Course brings supervisors up to date before their SSSTS certificate expires. Delivered in a single day, it revisits the core supervisory content while adding current industry issues and best practice updates that have emerged since initial certification. Only delegates who have passed the two-day CITB SSSTS Course, or a previous one-day SSSTS Refresher Course within the last five years, are eligible to attend.

Since fire risks and emergency procedures feature prominently in this refresher, supervisors on higher-risk sites often pair it with a dedicated Fire Marshal Course, building on the awareness covered here with more detailed emergency response training. Supervisors due for renewal alongside their site managers frequently book this course at the same time as the CITB SMSTS Refresher Course, keeping every level of site leadership current together.

Because manual handling and working at height remain two of the most common causes of site injury, this refresher also touches on both areas, making it a natural companion to the Manual Handling Online Course and Working at Height Training for supervisors wanting a fuller refresh across the board.

A good standard of spoken and written English is also necessary to complete the course successfully.

On successful completion of the CITB SSSTS Refresher Course, delegates will be able to:

  • Understand problems currently highlighted in the industry within their role
  • Have an understanding of how health and safety law is currently structured
  • Identify how their supervisory role fits in with the manager in controlling the site safely
  • Carry out site inductions, briefings and toolbox talks, and understand the need for method statements
  • Improve communication routes within site activities

The CITB SSSTS Refresher Course will cover the following topics:

  • Current enforcement priorities, HSE and environment
  • Fire risks, emergency procedures and reporting
  • Best practice updates on noise and vibration, dermatitis, asbestos, drugs and alcohol, and stress factors
  • Dynamic risk assessment procedures
  • Hazardous substances
  • Work at height
  • Manual handling
  • Toolbox talks

Delegates sit an exam paper of 25 questions at the end of the CITB SSSTS Refresher Course, four of which are safety critical and require a short written answer. Multiple-choice questions are worth one point each, while safety critical questions are worth one to three points each. All safety critical questions must be answered correctly to pass, and the overall pass mark is 80% (24 out of 30). Successful candidates are awarded the CITB SSSTS, Site Supervision Safety Training Scheme certificate, valid for five years.

The CITB SSSTS Refresher Course is for any delegate with a current, in-date SSSTS certificate that is due to expire.

Only delegates who have passed the two-day CITB SSSTS Course, or a previous one-day SSSTS Refresher Course, and can provide evidence of this, are eligible to attend the CITB SSSTS Refresher Course. This prior certification must have been achieved within five years of the refresher course start date. A good understanding of spoken and written English is also necessary to attend and successfully complete the course.
