Every qualified electrician started somewhere, and for thousands of people across the UK, the City & Guilds Level 2 Diploma in Electrical Installations (2365-02) Course is where that journey begins. Anyone ready to move into the electrical trade and looking for a nationally recognised qualification that delivers real, practical skills from day one will find this the natural starting point.
Designed specifically for new entrants, the course covers everything needed to understand how electrical installations work, from underpinning science and safety legislation through to hands-on wiring practice using industry-standard tools. It's built to be more than classroom theory: learners combine flexible online self-study with face-to-face training at a purpose-built centre, blending the freedom to work through content at their own pace with the practical time no screen-based learning can replace. Time at the centre focuses on fundamental installation tasks, inspection and verification techniques, and hands-on practice with containment systems, including trunking, conduit, cable tray and various cable types such as armoured and PVC singles.
By the time the course is complete, delegates have a solid grounding in the electrical industry and a clear sense of where their career can go next. Many progress directly onto the City & Guilds Level 3 Diploma in Electrical Installations (2365-03), which builds on this foundation with more advanced design, fault diagnosis and inspection and testing content, and from there towards an NVQ and AM2 assessment of competence. Others use the Level 2 Diploma as a stepping stone into a trainee electrician or labouring role while continuing their training part-time, or as preparation before applying for a funded apprenticeship.
Delegates should bring photographic ID, such as a passport or driving licence, to every assessment session, along with the City & Guilds Textbook: Book 1 Electrical Installations, 2nd Edition, available from online retailers.

No prior experience is needed. The course is designed specifically for new entrants to the industry, whether you're a complete beginner or coming from a related trade background.
Not on its own, but it's the essential first step. To become a fully qualified electrician, you'll need to complete the Level 3 Diploma, followed by your NVQ Level 3 and AM2 assessment of competence. Many learners also use the Level 2 to move into work as a trainee electrician or labourer while they continue training.
