IOSH Managing Safely Course

Every manager carries responsibility for the safety of their team, and the IOSH Managing Safely Course gives that responsibility real substance. Developed by the Institute of Occupational Safety & Health for managers and supervisors in any business sector or organisation, it's designed to help managers introduce new controls and implement change within their department, promoting a safer workplace in line with organisational policy and health and safety compliance.

For managers wanting a lighter, non-managerial introduction to health and safety awareness for their wider team, the IOSH Working Safely Course covers similar ground at employee level, and organisations often book the two together to build a consistent safety culture from the shop floor up. Managers ready to build on this qualification with a deeper technical grounding sometimes progress onto the NEBOSH National General Certificate once their Managing Safely certification is in place.

Because risk assessment features so heavily throughout the course, delegates often pair it with the Risk Assessment Online Course for a deeper practical grounding in the technique. Organisations wanting board-level and management-level expectations properly aligned frequently combine this course with the CITB Health and Safety for Directors Course for their senior leadership team, while construction site managers specifically often hold this alongside the CITB SMSTS Course to cover both general management and construction-specific requirements.

Delegates are responsible for submitting their written and practical assessments within the required timescales; failure to do so results in failing the course, regardless of the quality of the work submitted.

Following successful completion of this IOSH course, candidates will be able to:

• Understand the main guidelines and practice set out in the Health & Safety at Work Act
• Explain the component parts of a recognised safety management system such as HSG65 and OHSAS 18001
• Identify the data and techniques required to produce an adequate record of an incident, and demonstrate the procedure for an accident investigation, recognising the human factors involved
• Describe statutory requirements for reporting and procedures for checking for non-reporting
• Define "hazard" and "risk", and describe the legal requirements for risk assessment
• Demonstrate a practical understanding of a risk assessment technique and the data required for records
• Describe workplace precaution hierarchies
• Prepare and use active monitoring checklists, and implement schedules for active monitoring, recording results and analysing records
• Outline relevant health and safety legislation, codes of practice, guidance notes and information sources such as the Health and Safety Executive

The course will cover the following topics:

• Introduction and overview
• Risk assessment
• Risk control
• Understanding responsibilities
• Health and safety legislation
• Common hazards
• Investigating accidents and incidents
• Measuring performance
• Environmental protection

An IOSH Managing Safely certificate is awarded to delegates who attend and successfully complete both the written and practical assessments. Understanding is evaluated through a written assessment paper of 25 multi-format questions, alongside a practical risk assessment based project. Delegates are responsible for submitting their assessments within the required timescales, and failure to do so results in failing the course. Successful delegates receive their Managing Safely certificate directly from IOSH by email.

This course is for managers and supervisors in any sector or organisation who are required to manage risk and resources within their role.
