NPORS Ride on Roller Course N214

Overview

Using a mixture of classroom learning and hands on practical exercises, this NPORS training course will give a thorough understanding of how to safely operate a ride on roller, as well as key health and safety legislation around the construction industry and related environments.  If you’ve never used a ride on roller before, this novice course is a great place to start in achieving a formal qualification.

At the end of this course, delegates who successfully pass the training will receive an NPORS Operator Card, which is valid for three years.  Should you require the NPORS/CSCS Card (NPORS Red Trained Operators Card), you must confirm at the time of booking and provide evidence that the CSCS HSE Operatives touch screen test has been completed within the last two years.

Objectives

By the end of this NPORS training course, you’ll have the skills and knowledge to safely operate a ride on roller on a worksite. You will also:

  • Recognise worksite hazards and specific dangers associated with the construction industry
  • Explain your responsibilities as a plant operator
  • Have a working knowledge of the ride on rollers’ manufacturer’s handbook
  • Explain PPE – what you need to wear and how to store it correctly
  • Understand the machine: controls, components and their functions
  • Carry out pre-operational checks, end of shift and shut down procedures
  • Understand legislative requirements when maintaining and operating ride on rollers
  • Configure the roller for loading and unloading exercises
  • Ensure your work area is safe
  • Operate the ride on roller – start engine, move off, manoeuvre and stop
  • Understand the environmental impact of operating machinery
  • Explain the safe and efficient procedures of machine transportation

Agenda

This Novice NPORS course is made up of both theory and practical learning, covering the following topics:

  • Site safety and legislation
  • The Operators Safety Code
  • Ride on rollers – get to know the machine, its function and controls
  • Pre-operational checks
  • Basic maintenance and inspections
  • Refuelling
  • Configuration
  • Operating a ride on roller safely and effectively
  • Compacting soil and road surfaces
  • Recognising and tackling underground hazards
  • Guidelines for overhead services
  • Identifying compacted/uncompacted areas
  • Dealing with instability and unsupported edges
  • Safety procedures
  • Parking and shutting down safely

Assessment

At the end of the course, delegates are required to take an assessment paper and practical test. If successful in passing both elements, you’ll be awarded the traditional NPORS Operator Card, which is valid for three years. 

Should you require the NPORS/CSCS Card (NPORS Red Trained Operators Card), you must confirm at the time of booking and provide evidence that you’ve completed the CSCS HSE Operatives touch screen test within the last two years. 

The NPORS Red card will be valid for two years and prior to the card expiry you'll need to register for a relevant plant NVQ. After successfully completing your NVQ, you’ll be issued with a blue Competent Operators Card, which is valid for five years.

Prerequisites

A good understanding of spoken and written English will be necessary in order to attend and complete the course successfully.
