ONLINE EUSR SHEA Power Course (Remote Learning)

1 Day CourseOnline Instructor Led

If you work with power systems, utilities, energy, or the UK's electricity infrastructure, you're expected to move confidently and make quick decisions to keep yourself and others safe. This one-day Online EUSR SHEA Power Course (Remote Learning) gives you the awareness and regulatory grounding you need to carry out your work well, aligning with Health & Safety Executive (HSE) expectations. Holding this recognised SHEA Power qualification demonstrates your ability to meet the rigorous standards required to work on National Grid and Distribution Network Operator (DNO) sites.

Without it, you'll have restricted access to many work sites, as gaps in knowledge can lead to unsafe conditions and regulatory breaches. A fully remote, instructor-led course that you can access anywhere, this interactive training is led by experts and recognised under the CSCS Alliance scheme. Anyone working across both power and gas utility sectors may also want to look at the Online EUSR SHEA Gas Course (Remote Learning), which follows the same SHEA framework applied specifically to gas industry work.

Since substation and underground cable work can involve confined space environments, delegates whose role touches on this should also consider the City & Guilds Confined Space Medium Risk (6160-09) Course alongside this course. A valid EUSR SHEA Power Card is required to be eligible for work on regulated UK power network sites, and to comply with regulations, training needs to be renewed every three years.

A good understanding of spoken and written English is necessary to attend and complete the course successfully, and students are required to complete their training on a laptop or desktop computer with a webcam, microphone and speaker; tablets aren't supported.

Please note: from 1 October 2026, SHEA registration and the EUSR CSCS card are separate. You'll still gain a valid SHEA registration automatically on completing your training, but if your role requires a CSCS card for construction site access, you'll need to apply separately for the appropriate EUSR CSCS card. If you need an EUSR CSCS embossed card, please get in touch with us on 01892 543000 or [email protected] before your course start date, as an additional fee applies.

Over the course of one day, this online course will teach you how to spot hazards early and understand how your actions impact both site safety and the environment. You'll follow best practice guidelines to work safely on site, including:

  • The Health and Safety at Work etc Act, 1974
  • Safety practices in the power industry
  • Minimise environmental impact at power sites by managing waste, avoiding contamination and supporting sustainability
  • Understanding your legal duties under the HSE
  • Staying compliant: regulations, site safety rules and employer expectations
  • Evaluate risks and implement safety controls for yourself and your team
  • Recognise and prevent electrical and environmental hazards
  • Identify power industry hazards from substations, overhead lines, underground cables, and high-voltage equipment
  • Carry out risk assessments
  • Emergency response procedures to help safeguard people, property and the environment
  • Follow safety and reporting protocols during power generation and distribution

The course is made up of eight modules: six core modules on health, safety, and the environment that apply to all utility sectors, and two focused on power industry-specific challenges such as power hazards, generation, and distribution.

  • Module 1: Power generation and distribution (scheme-specific module)
  • Module 2: Understanding our workplace responsibilities
  • Module 3: Understanding the effects of our work on the environment
  • Module 4: Identifying and controlling risks
  • Module 5: Common hazards and controls in the workplace
  • Module 6: Occupational health hazards
  • Module 7: Power industry hazards (scheme-specific module)
  • Module 8: Responding to emergencies

At the end of each module, delegates take a multiple-choice test of 10 questions. It's marked automatically, and you'll need 80% to pass. On successful completion, successful candidates receive an EUSR Power Card to recognise successful completion of the course and demonstrate an understanding of the relevant health and safety regulations. The scheme follows CITB standards and offers an organised framework for ensuring safety in the power industry.

The Online EUSR SHEA Power Course (Remote Learning) is for anyone involved in operational activities within the power sector, including managers, supervisors, safety professionals and operatives. It's mandatory training if you want to gain access to power sites run by organisations like National Grid and regional Distribution Network Operators, including National Grid Electricity Distribution across England and Wales.

This course is especially relevant for:

  • Direct operational workers, overhead linespersons and underground cable jointers
  • Substation installation and maintenance workers
  • Electricians and electrical mates
  • Technical, planning and engineering staff
  • Electrical and civil engineers
  • Project managers and site supervisors
  • Surveyors and utility planners
