ONLINE NEBOSH HSE Introduction to Incident Investigation Course (Remote Learning)

ONLINE NEBOSH HSE Introduction to Incident Investigation Course (Remote Learning)

1 Day CourseOnline Instructor Led

Accidents can occur in even the safest, best-run and most compliant workplaces. The ONLINE NEBOSH HSE Introduction to Incident Investigation Course (Remote Learning) provides the range of skills needed to conduct an unaided investigation of non-complex health and safety incidents, while also enabling candidates to work as part of a team on larger, more complex investigations. Delivered as a scheduled, interactive online class over one day, the course carries the same content and assessment as classroom-based training.

Jointly developed by the National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health (NEBOSH) and the UK's health and safety regulatory body, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), the course combines their expertise into an industry-leading qualification informed by years of practice. It prepares candidates to produce a risk-controlling action plan and implement it to prevent similar incidents recurring. Anyone wanting a broader grounding in workplace health and safety alongside this specific investigative skill set should also look at the NEBOSH National General Certificate, which many candidates hold before progressing onto this course.

For employers, the course demonstrates a genuine commitment to following key legislation, promotes a positive health and safety culture, and brings incident investigation in-house rather than relying on independent contractors. For learners, it builds the skills to investigate non-complex incidents unaided, applicable across a wide range of industries. Anyone whose role also involves broader risk assessment should pair this course with the Risk Assessment Online Course, since identifying risk and investigating incidents after the fact are closely related disciplines. To take part, delegates need access to a laptop or desktop computer with a webcam, microphone and speaker; tablets aren't supported for this course.

Upon completion of this NEBOSH Course, candidates will be able to:

  • Carry out solo investigations for non-complex incidents
  • Contribute to team investigations for more complex incidents
  • Gather and analyse evidence, including conducting witness interviews using the internationally approved PEACE model
  • Positively impact the health and safety culture of the organisation
  • Enable the company to undertake day-to-day activities more safely with greater health and safety awareness
  • Produce an action plan to prevent incident recurrence and improve business performance

This virtual course has one main unit, INV1, divided into five elements:

  • Incident terminology, the moral, legal and financial arguments for investigations, and management system requirements
  • Human and organisational factors
  • Investigating incidents, including the process for gathering evidence
  • Positive strategies for, and the barriers to, successful interviews
  • Advanced incident investigation techniques

This NEBOSH course is completed with a 60-minute practical assessment, based on a hypothetical accident scenario. Candidates are provided with a pack of evidence and shown a video of three witness interviews.

They are then assessed on the following:

  • Ability to review the evidence
  • Evaluate each interview
  • Produce an action plan to prevent the incident from recurring

Please note that all course materials and certificates are sent via post, with an additional charge for delivery outside the UK, confirmed once booking has been made.

This course is primarily designed for:

  • Anyone who needs to conduct incident investigations
  • Employees, managers and supervisors
  • Union and safety representatives
  • Anyone who aspires to become a health and safety professional

There are no formal entry requirements, though it's recommended that learners already have an underpinning knowledge of health and safety issues, and many will have gained another NEBOSH qualification beforehand. NEBOSH also recommends a minimum standard of English equivalent to an IELTS score of 6.0 or higher, to ensure learners can understand and articulate the concepts covered in the syllabus. Delegates need access to a laptop or desktop computer with a webcam, microphone and speaker; tablets aren't supported for this course.
