If you work in the petrol retail sector or you're responsible for managing workflow on a petrol forecourt, the SPA Petrol Retail Contractors Safety Passport Course (Remote Learning) will help you maintain the highest standards of safety in this unique and hazardous environment. Whether you're a contractor or a manager, you'll explore crucial topics including ignition sources and petrol forecourt hazards, as well as essential practices that underpin a safe and secure workplace.

Over the course of two days, you'll learn to recognise risks, apply effective control measures and understand your legal obligations, leaving with the confidence to interpret utility drawings and use detection equipment (Cat and Genny). This class is delivered via remote learning, with the same content as the classroom-based course, though you'll attend a scheduled, interactive video conferencing call. You'll need a laptop or desktop computer with a webcam, microphone and speaker to take part; tablets aren't supported. By the end of the two-day SPA Petrol Retail Contractors Safety Passport Course (Remote Learning), you'll understand how to work safely on and around a petrol forecourt. Day 1 covers health and safety basics, while Day 2 focuses on the petrol retail sector: the specific risks and operational procedures on forecourts. You'll leave with the ability to:

• Recognise how your behaviour can affect Health, Safety, and Environmental Standards
• Understand Risk Assessments and why they're important
• Explain how and when to update assessments
• Demonstrate your knowledge of each module

This remote learning is split over two days. Depending on your previous training, you may be exempt from attending Day 1. Here's what each day entails:

Day 1: Core safety principles for any work environment:

• Understand your legal responsibilities in the workplace
• The importance of risk assessment in workplace safety
• Identify and control hazards in the workplace, including fire safety, hidden risks, asbestos, working at height and in confined spaces
• How our behaviour impacts workplace safety and environmental standards
• Learn safe practices for using tools, plant and machinery
• Electrical safety for hand-held tools
• Energy sources and workplace transport
• Recognise and manage health risks such as hazardous substances, manual handling, noise, stress, and musculoskeletal issues
• Follow safe systems of work, emergency procedures, first aid and road safety
  Know your environmental responsibilities: safe storage, waste management and pollution control
• Emergency planning

Day 2: The Petrol Retail Sector:

• Explore the unique hazards of petrol filling stations: fuel properties, delivery risks, and dangers posed by customers and contractors
• Understand Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations (DSEAR) and learn about hazardous area zoning on the forecourt
• Identify restricted and hazardous areas and manage the safety implications of vapour recovery systems
• Master safe forecourt management through clear communication, safety method statements, clearance certificates, permits to work, and task classification
• Apply your knowledge of risk assessment and safe working practices, tailored to the petrol retail environment

At the end of each module of the SPA Petrol Retail Contractors Safety Passport Course (Remote Learning), you'll be tested to check your knowledge and understanding of the content, before moving on to the next. On successful completion of the course, you'll receive a SPA Safety Passport photo ID card, which is valid for three years.

You need a Petrol Safety Passport if your job involves working on or around forecourts, transporting fuel or dealing with hazardous oils. The SPA Petrol Retail Contractors Safety Passport Course (Remote Learning) teaches site hazards and safe practices for contractors at petrol stations, as well as those responsible for controlling workflow on a petrol forecourt.

If you have other recognised safety qualifications, you may be excused from attending the first day of this two-day course.
