CCNSG Safety Passport: Cost, Validity and Renewal Explained

What the course costs, how long the card lasts, and what changed in September 2026 for anyone renewing.

The CCNSG Safety Passport is one of the most requested cards on industrial sites, and one of the most misunderstood when it comes to renewal. The rules on timing were already strict. From September 2026, the way renewed cards are dated has changed as well.

This guide covers what the CCNSG Safety Passport course costs, what the price should include, how long the card lasts and how renewal now works. Prices quoted are typical UK ranges for classroom delivery, excluding VAT, and vary by provider and location.

What the Course Covers

The national course runs over two days and is delivered face to face by an ECITB approved training provider. It covers health and safety law, permits to work, working at height, confined spaces, excavations, lifting operations, hazardous substances and isolation, with multiple-choice assessments along the way.

It’s written for anyone working on an engineering construction site, from operatives and technicians through to visiting engineers. A temporary card is usually issued on the day, and the photocard follows from ECITB.

What It Costs

Course

Duration

Typical cost (excl. VAT)

CCNSG Safety Passport

2 days

£165 to £200

CCNSG Renewal course

1 day

£115 to £150

CCNSG Renewal, test only

Half day or less

£75 to £105

CCNSG Leading a Team Safely

1 day

From £130

Because every provider teaches the same ECITB syllabus, the spread reflects location and venue costs rather than course content.

What the Price Should Include

For most approved providers, the advertised price covers everything needed to qualify:

  • Two days of tuition with an ECITB approved trainer

  • Course materials and the end of module assessments

  • ECITB registration and the passport card itself

That last point is worth checking. A few providers list the ECITB card fee as a separate line, which makes their headline price look lower than it is. Resits, travel and replacement cards also sit outside the course fee.

Delegates need to bring photo ID, such as a UK photocard driving licence or passport, their National Insurance number and two passport photos. Anyone who arrives without valid photo ID can be refused a place and still be charged.

How Long the Card Lasts

A card issued after the two-day national course is valid for three years. There is no grace period after the expiry date. If the card lapses, even by a day, the holder goes back to the full two-day course.

ECITB can authorise a late renewal in genuine cases, such as a significant medical condition or an overseas assignment. That has to be requested through the training provider, and it’s not automatic.

Renewal: What Changed in September 2026

Renewal is done through either the one-day CCNSG renewal course or a test-only route sat at an approved centre. Both must be completed before the card expires.

From 7 September 2026, ECITB changed how renewed cards are dated. Previously, renewing early carried unused time forward, up to six months. Now every renewed card is valid for 39 months, three years and three months, from the date of the renewal assessment. A card can also be renewed at any point.

In practice, renewing within the final three months before expiry loses nothing. Renewing earlier than that means the unused time on the old card isn’t carried over. The best window for booking is therefore the three months before the expiry date.

Renewal Course or Test Only

The test-only route suits people who work under CCNSG rules every day and are confident in the content. The one-day course suits anyone who has been away from that kind of site for a while, or who wants the update on what has changed since their last card.

Both lead to the same renewed card. The difference is how much preparation the holder needs, not what the client will accept.

Checking a Card Before Work Starts

ECITB launched an online card and certificate checker in September 2026, so employers and site teams can confirm a passport is genuine and in date. It’s worth using at pre-qualification rather than at the gate, when a lapsed card is still a scheduling problem rather than a lost day.

Key Takeaways

  • The two-day CCNSG course typically costs £165 to £200 plus VAT, and the syllabus is the same with every approved provider.

  • Check whether the ECITB card fee is included before comparing quotes.

  • The card lasts three years, and an expired card means repeating the full two-day course.

  • Since September 2026, renewed cards run for 39 months from the renewal date, so renewing in the final three months before expiry loses nothing.

  • Bring photo ID, a National Insurance number and two passport photos on the first day.
