NEBOSH courses for Health and Safety

The NEBOSH General Certificate which you can book through this website teaches delegates the basics of health and safety.  But why is health and safety so important in the workplace?  And how long has it been in place?

Many people may believe that health and safety is a new thing but the workplace health and safety we see now has taken many years to come into place.  Health and safety is vital in the workplace as it keeps both employees and customers safe within an organisation.  Due to this there are strict rules which employers must follow when it comes to health and safety.  If these are broken then employers are at risk of being fined and employees are put in danger.  Everyone has the basic right to work safely.

Interestingly, the first act of health and safety occurred in 1833 under the provisions of the Factories Act 1833.  The act stated that factories should be inspected regularly to prevent injury and the use of under-age workers.  Back then, there were just four inspectors who covered a 3,000 mile radius, although the number of inspectors increased over the years.  By the 1900's there were also inspections in place for mines and quarries.  This again was to reduce injury and prevent child workers.

Throughout the 1900's, more and more acts were introduced to maintain the safety of workers in different industries.  This resulted in the first Health and Safety Commission report being published in 1976.  The report outlined three main aims – encourage positive attitudes in the workplace, develop better information about the cause and scale of hazards and to review the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.

Following this report, NEBOSH (The National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health) was started five years later in 1979.  It was started with the aim of offering qualifications to meet health, safety, environmental and risk factors within the workplace.  The board has grown and now attract over 35,000 candidates in 500 different locations.

At Easybook Training we offer various different courses in NEBOSH which include the General Certificate which isn't industry specific.  This certificate can be undertaken by anyone as it gives the basic information about health and safety and requires no prior knowledge.  We also provide NEBOSH courses in construction which is aimed at supervisors, managers and CDM coordinators in industry.  There is also the NEBOSH Fire Certificate and NEBOSH International Certificate which delegates can choose from.

The NEBOSH courses are nationally recognised qualifications and should be considered by anyone practising health and safety.
