IOSH, the Institute of Occupations Safety and Health are the world’s leading body for health and safety professionals and are the first European safety body to be awarded NGO status by the International Labour Organisation.
As previously mentioned, the IOSH courses are aimed at different levels of profession. The
IOSH Working Safely course, for example, is aimed at any worker within any industry, providing a strong grounding in health and safety. The
IOSH Managing Safely course is aimed at managers and supervisors, again in any industry, and provides more detailed information than the first course.
The other two certificates are for delegates who hold more senior positions within their business. The IOSH Safety for Senior Executives is aimed at people with strategic responsibility, giving more information about legislations and employers responsibilities. Finally, the IOSH Directing Safely certificate is created for top level decision makers, looking at financial and legal issues along with a wide range of other topics.
So, do you need an IOSH qualification? During 2011 along, there were 26,000 major workplace injuries reported in the UK with the frequent causes of injury being manual handling, trips and falling from heights. Many of these cases could have been prevented had the correct health and safety training been issued.
The IOSH courses are beneficial to any organisation as even the most basic course – IOSH Working Safely - meet the Governments guidelines for introductory health and safety training. The course covers all of the important health and safety basics as well as touching on environmental issues. It is vital that everyone in the work place has a basic understanding of health and safety which can be offered by the IOSH course.
Health and safety is an important aspect of everyday life, everyone deserves to go to work and be safe. Unfortunately, it doesn’t matter how knowledgeable about health and safety an employer is, accidents will always happen. This is why employees need to be trained in basic health and safety as well. With new legislations being introduced all the time, it’s important to keep up to date, making IOSH an important qualification for the workplace.
