The SSSTS course is endorsed by the United Kingdom Contractors Group (UKCG) and is the standard training for all supervisors working on their sites. So why is this course so highly regarded, and why is it so important to take an SSSTS course?
Recent statistics show that you are more likely to suffer an injury on a construction site than in any other industry. Whilst the number of fatalities on the construction site has decreased dramatically over the past twenty years, there are still too many fatalities taking place. It's not only fatalities which are worrying on the construction site, but also muscular injuries, falls and electric shocks as well as many other workplace injuries.

The UKCG represents over thirty leading contractors within the UK. Between these contractors they represent £33 billion of the UK construction turnover each year, over a third of all construction turnover. The UKCG work hard to protect the construction industries reputation as well as the workers health, supplying their members with all the information they need to work safely.
In 2010, the UKCG introduced their health and safety standard charter. The aim of the charter being to improve health and safety within the construction industry. The UKCG wanted to ensure that those working on UKCG sites were fully qualified in all aspects of health and safety and that risks to workers were minimised.
The charter included the introduction of the UKCG Supervisor Training Standard. This consists of two aspects. The first states that all site supervisors must ensure they are up to date with all health and safety legislation. Secondly, all supervisors must have correct training in how to lead a construction site, minimise risks and present necessary information to workers.
The SSSTS course is endorsed by UKCG as the standard training for all site supervisors. The course lasts for just two days so doesn't require a lot of time from a busy site supervisors schedule. The main topics covered by the SSSTS course include understanding the problems within the industry, understanding health and safety law and monitoring sites effectively. The course also teaches the delegates how to carry out their own training for workers, effective site inductions for new workers and carry out effective risk assessments.
Whilst the SSSTS course will not eradicate all injuries, it gives site supervisors the knowledge they require to run a site safety and effectively. The SSSTS is therefore vital to all site supervisors, managers, gangers or anyone who has or intends to have supervisory responsibilities.
