Working in confined spaces: what can you do to remove the cramp?

Working in confined spaces: what can you do to remove the cramp?

When working in a space that is less than ideal, it can often be hard to work to your maximum capacity. With limited working space, you can often find yourself dealing with rather challenging conditions that minimise your productivity. Not only can this be annoying from a productivity perspective, but it can become a health and safety risk if you allow it.

That’s why we highly recommend that anyone who is working in a confined workspace looks to make some changes to how they work. For one, it would make sense to invest some time and effort into a confined space course that can show you how to best work in a confined space without increasing the risk either to yourself or others. Courses such as a City and Guilds Confined Space Low Risk Course, City & Guilds Confined Space Medium Risk Course or City and Guilds Confined Space High Risk Course can be essential for making sure you can work within a limited area, ensuring you bring the right equipment and assistance to ensure you are not put at any risk needlessly.

When you need to work in anything deemed a ‘medium risk’ confined space, it’s essential that you bring the right tools with you. For example, items like using emergency escape equipment, using a breathing apparatus or even knowing how to enter the area safely are going to be essential.

Why is working in a confined space so dangerous?

There are several reasons why working in a confined space can be a problematic issue. Some of the issues include:

  • You are going to be put at risk because you are working in an area that might be hard to enter or escape from.
  • Confined spaces can often be contained within uncertain structural areas, making it essential to be vigilant.
  • Minimal or reduced oxygen levels due to the confined nature of the space means that you could be put at risk.
  • The risk of other issues such as flooding and/or fire can become a major concern, too, given the limited space.
  • Other factors come into mind, too, such as the risk for contaminants from excessive dust and other particles.

It’s for this reason that being well-coached in the concept of dealing with confined spaces is essential. All it takes is one wrong move or an incorrect action, and you could put yourself – and others – at risk. Given many jobs that take place in a limited or confined space will be time-oriented, too, you want to make sure that you can get in and out of the dangerous situation with as little fuss as is possible.

Keep that in mind, and you should have no problem at all in dealing with the confined spaces you need to work within. A bit of vigilance, some coaching, and preparation can go a very long way to making sure the job is done correctly. It’s a tough thing to get right, but you should absolutely look to make the right call here – so, if you are going to be working in a tight spot, be sure to think about making a wise investment in the right coaching or confined space training!
