NVQ Level 2 in Trowel Occupations (Bricklaying)

The NVQ Level 2 in Trowel Occupations course is aimed at candidates who are already working as a bricklayer and who want to achieve a qualification that recognises their skills and expertise.  On successful completion of the course, students will be able to apply for their CSCS Blue Skilled Workers Card.

Topics covered by the course include how to set out and construct masonry structures and work with a variety of materials. Learners will also have the opportunity to specialise in subjects such as rendering, plastering and working with concrete.

Applicants MUST be at least 16 years old and have a good understanding of the English language.  This bricklaying nvq course is designed so the learner can gain the qualification while at work and enhance their career prospects.


Objectives

At the end of the NVQ Level 2 in Trowel Occupations course candidates will be able to demonstrate knowledge, understanding and skills in a number of areas including setting out, constructing and maintaining masonry structures.

Agenda

The Level 2 Construction NVQ in Trowel Occupations course has two units, one mandatory and the other optional. The course topics are as follows:

Mandatory units: Candidates must complete all of the following units:

  • Health and safety
  • Productive workplace practices
  • Laying out masonry structures
  • Constructing masonry structures

Optional units include: Candidates must choose one of the following units:

  • Installing drainage
  • Applying rendering
  • Working with plaster
  • Repairing and maintaining masonry structures
  • Working with concrete
  • Constructing cladding
  • Working with lime mortars
  • Conservation of stonemasonry or brickwork

Assessment

In order to successfully complete the Level 2 construction course, an NVQ assessor will observe the learner through a range of methods:

  • observations to see skills in practice
  • professional discussions
  • written questions
  • a portfolio of evidence

*To apply for the CSCS Blue Skilled Worker Card candidates must have an up to date CITB Health and Safety Touch Screen Test*
