NVQ Level 3 in Painting and Decorating
The NVQ Level 3 in Painting and Decorating course is aimed at candidates who are currently working as a painter and decorator and who want to achieve an advanced qualification. On successful completion of this NVQ course, students will be able to apply for their CSCS Gold Advanced Craft Card.
Topics covered by the course include working at height, prepping surfaces, wall coverings and stencils.
Applicants MUST be at least 16 years old and have a good understanding of the English language. The course is designed so the learner can gain the qualification while at work and enhance their career prospects.
Objectives
At the end of the NVQ Level 3 in Painting and Decorating course, candidates will be able to demonstrate advanced skills in a number of areas including applying paint, installing coving and producing paint effects.

The NVQ Level 3 in Painting and Decorating course will cover the following topics:
Mandatory:
- Surface preparation
- Working at height and using platforms
- Selecting types of paint
- Selecting types of brushes
- Health and safety
Optional units - candidates must select one from the below:
- Standard wallpapering
- Working with vinyl
Optional units - candidates must select one from the below:
- Spray painting
- Stencils
- Complex wallpapering techniques
- Paint effects such as metal leaf, comb and grain effects
- How to use and install coving and decorative mouldings
- Marbling
Assessment
In order to successfully complete this Level 3 construction NVQ course; an NVQ assessor will observe the learner through a range of methods:
- observations to see skills in practice
- professional discussions
- written questions
- a portfolio of evidence
*To apply for the CSCS Gold Advanced Craft Card candidates must have an up to date CITB Health and Safety Touch Screen Test*
Prerequisite
Applicants MUST be at least 16 years old, have a good understanding of the English language and be working as a painter and decorator.

Students will have telephone and email access to their dedicated assessor throughout the working week. Assessors will be on-hand to answer any questions and offer assistance where required
CSCS card costs
The current cost of the CSCS card is £36. Students will be required to apply for their CSCS card directly on receipt of their certificate.
Certificate
NVQ certificates typically takes just 10 working days to be issued on completion of the course.

Your assessor will visit you on-site or conduct assessments remotely to review your evidence and discuss your progress, meaning you won’t need to take any time away from work.
What card does this NVQ allow me to apply for?

How many optional units do I need to complete?
Two, one selected from a choice of wallpapering or vinyl work, and a second from a broader list including spray painting, stencils, coving and marbling.
