NRSWA (New Roads & Street Works Act) Operatives Course

NRSWA (New Roads & Street Works Act) Operatives Course

5 Days CourseClassroom

The NRSWA Operatives Course is a necessity for any employee who is actively working on or adjacent to the public highways as defined by regulations supportive to the New Roads and Street Works Act 1991. This course assesses qualified, experienced operatives on their ability to perform duties to the standards prescribed in the SQA, safeguarding themselves and others around them. Operatives whose work also involves hot lay materials should look at the NRSWA Operatives Course (incl. Hot Lay) instead, which covers the same core units plus this additional specialism.

The NRSWA Operatives Course covers the procedures and guidelines for working on roads and highways, targeted at those employed by local authorities, utilities companies or contractors carrying out work on roads, highways or footpaths. Anyone unsure whether their current level of experience is suitable for entrance onto the course is encouraged to call the training team before booking a place, since it's through this range of qualified training and competence that accidents are avoided and road fatalities reduced.

Operatives progressing into a supervisory position should also look at the NRSWA Supervisor Course, which builds on the operative-level knowledge covered here with additional supervisory responsibilities. Once qualified, operatives whose certification is due to lapse will need to book the NRSWA Operatives Re-assessment Course to keep their qualification current.

In addition to bringing relevant PPE, students will need to take two passport size photographs for the card application, and a basic comprehension of the English language is essential.

  • The Health and Safety legislation and their obligations under this NRSW Act
  • PPE & Safety equipment required to carry out street work activities
  • Safe working practices and methods
  • Reference documentation used within the Highways Industry

The NRSWA Operatives Course will cover the following units:

  • LA: Location & avoidance of underground services
  • Unit 01: Signing, Lighting & Guarding
  • Unit 02: Excavation in the highway, specifications, techniques, road types, materials

  • Unit 05: Laying practices and reinstatement of cold lay bituminous materials, specification & types of materials
  • Unit 08: Reinstatement of modular surfaces & concrete footways

Students on the NRSWA Operatives Course are continually assessed and required to complete a test at the end of each unit. This is a highly interactive course with group exercises, continuous discussions and practical assessments taking place each day.

The NRSWA Operatives Course is designed for NRSWA operatives who physically carry out the work on the roadways and highways, including excavation, backfill and reinstatement of materials during street works.
