How long does the SMSTS course last?
The full SMSTS training course runs over five days. You can also complete this 5 day CITB SMSTS training as an online remote learning instructor-led course too, making it more accessible for those balancing site work and study.

How is the SMSTS course assessed?
The SMSTS Assessment is based on:
Your participation and engagement throughout the course
A multiple-choice and written short-answer test at the end
The trainer will also review your performance during the course, which is part of your overall assessment.
What is the SMSTS pass rate?
To successfully pass this Site Management Safety Training Scheme course, delegates are required to achieve a score of 81% or more. To successfully complete the SMSTS course, you must also pass the trainer's review. If you score between 72% and 78% on your final test, you may be allowed to resit the exam.
How long is the SMSTS certificate valid for?
Once completed, your CITB SMSTS certificate is valid for five years. You must take the SMSTS refresher course before it expires to maintain your qualification.
Are there any prerequisites for SMSTS training?
There are no formal qualifications required to start the SMSTS course. However, to get the most out of the course, you should:
Be able to read, write, and understand English to a good standard
Have some experience in construction or site management
Can I take the SMSTS course online?
Absolutely. SMSTS training online is available through virtual classrooms, making it easier to fit into your work schedule.

What if I fail the SMSTS exam?
If you fail the final test but pass your trainer review, you may be offered the opportunity to retake the exam. However, if you fail both the exam and trainer assessment, you will need to retake the full SMSTS course.
Do I need formal qualifications or experience to take the SMSTS course?
Formal qualifications are not necessary, but having some construction background is a big advantage. Most employers expect their site managers to hold an SMSTS qualification, especially for supervisory and safety-critical roles.
