How IOSH can help your business

It is vital, as a business owner that you are able to manage all the health and safety risks within your workplace, and undertaking an IOSH course can help.

There are many different things you need to think about in your business and health and safety is one of the most important aspects you need to think about.  Every business should conduct a thorough risk assessment of their business.  Once you have identified the risks, you will be able to work out how to control them, and put the appropriate measures in place.   To do this, you need to consider what, in your business, may cause harm to people and decide whether you are able to do anything to prevent the harm from occurring.

Many business owners struggle when writing risk assessments, however this is where the IOSH course can help.  Following completion of the IOSH course, delegates will be able to apply basic management principles and practices to any health and safety issues.  They will also be able to recognise risks present in the workplace, and set appropriate control measures to avoid hazards taking place.  The delegate will also be able to communicate effectively on health and safety issues with superiors and employees, meaning that your employees will be prepared for any risks.

Many businesses believe that a risk assessment means lots of paperwork, but isn't effective in controlling risks within your workplace, however this isn't the case.  The law doesn't state that you need to remove all risks from your organisation, it simply says that you need to ensure you are putting measures in place to control any risks.  It is likely that you will already have risk control measures in place, however they aren't official.

There are various IOSH courses you or your employees can take. The course they undertake depends on their role within the company.  For example, if you want all of your employees to undertake a course, they are likely to undertake the IOSH Working Safely course.  This is suitable for anyone working in any sector and teaches the groundings of health and safety.

In comparison, you may enrol one of your managers on an IOSH course, in which case they are likely to undertake the IOSH Managing Safely course.  This is a little bit more advanced than the other course, as it is for supervisors or managers.  There are also courses for people in more senior positions, such as 'IOSH Directing Safely' and 'IOSH Safety for Senior Executives'.
