What is SMSTS?

SMSTS is a training course provided for people working within construction. It is undertaken by around 10,000 people each year in the UK alone. Once the SMSTS certificate is completed it lasts for five years before it is required to be taken again.

The SMSTS training certificate is accredited by the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) and is nationally recognised, it is an essential part of modern day site training. The CITB recommend the SMSTS training course to all site managers, project managers, site supervisors and owners of small to medium construction companies. Holding an SMSTS qualification is listed in the Approved Code of Practice for the construction regulations. It is a key requirement for anyone wanting to be a site manager.

SMSTS is aimed at construction workers who have the responsibility of managing a site. Working on a construction site can be one of the most dangerous jobs, there are dangers everywhere. The purpose of this course is to encourage safe working within the construction site. In order for this to be possible, the site managers need to be knowledgeable about risks and dangers on the site.

SMSTS Training is undertaken by hundreds of deleagte through Easybook Training.

The SMSTS training course takes five days. During this time, the course covers health and safety, risk assessments as well as new legislations. By the end of the course, site managers should be able to implement any new legislations, industry best practice as well as being able to state their duties with regards to health and safety. The course enables the delegate to have a better understanding of the legal, moral and social responsibilities of their role.

Once the initial SMSTS training certificate has run out, the delegate is able to complete a SMSTS refresher course. This course lasts two days and covers any legislations which have come into place as well as refreshing all the previous course information. Once this course has been completed the delegate will receive a new certificate.

The SMSTS training courses are run across the UK making it easy to attend a course. As well as the SMSTS there are a range of other courses construction workers can do. These include the SSSTS training course for site supervisors as well as the NEBOSH construction certificate.

Health and safety is vital in the construction industry, last year alone the highest rates of workplace injury were in construction. It is therefore very important for all construction management to hold an up to date SMSTS certificate.
