SMSTS Course to keep safe in all weathers

SMSTS Course to keep safe in all weathers

When working on a construction site, it's important to be prepared for all weathers which the SMSTS course can help with.

Even as we enter Spring, it's still important to be prepared for any eventuality.  April brings the dreaded 'April Showers' which can cause havoc on a construction site.  Much work on a construction site involves operations which are weather sensitive.  It is the responsibility of the site manager to decide whether a construction site is safe enough to work on.  The site manager must either have the experience to decide this, or the correct training.

Whilst the SMSTS course may not prepare site managers for every eventuality, it can certainly give enough knowledge to help them to make informed decisions.  The SMSTS course is one of the most highly regarded courses in the construction industry and is listed in the Approved Code of Practice for construction regulations.  This is the minimum requirement to demonstrate competence for a site manager.

The course covers all aspects of legislation and other aspects which affect safe working on site.  It also teaches managers the importance of risk assessments and how they can conduct them on site.  Whilst many managers may find it easy to carry out a risk assessment, it is often the case that they struggle to implement them and maintain communication to sustain effective health and safety culture on site.

If you are a manager on a construction site, there are a number of risk assessments you need to carry out.  First of all, you need to carry out the general risk assessment.  This is the standard risk assessment for any business, in any industry and assesses any health and safety risks to employees and others exposed to construction sites.   There are also specific risk assessments which have to be carried out.  Certain regulations mean that risk assessments are required for specific hazards, these can include manual handling, hazardous substance and noise.  A risk assessment can also prepare site managers for bad weather, which is typical of the UK.

The SMSTS course runs for just five days and can last up to five years.  After this has expired, the site manager can take a refresher course to renew their certificate.  The SMSTS refresher is just a two day course, and lasts for another five days.

If you manage a construction site, it is vital that you understand the risks and are able to communicate them effectively to employees.  This makes the SMSTS course essential training for any site manager job.
